Ryan Reynolds Says Age Is A Factor In Stunts For Upcoming Films

  • Ryan Reynolds revealed that over the last decade, stunts have become increasingly difficult to perform on his own.
  • The Deadpool star joked that “you’re not allowed to eat Advil like cereal,” and plans to have a trained stunt professional do some of the more “gnarly” scenes in upcoming films.
  • Reynolds will star in the Netflix film The Adam Project alongside Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo, set to premiere March 11.

Ryan Reynolds is well known for his physically demanding, action-packed roles in movies like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Green Lantern, Free Guy, and of course, Deadpool. But in a new interview with Variety, the 45-year-old revealed that his age may be getting the best of him, at least when it comes to performing his own stunts.

From crashing through car sunroofs and windows to fighting on highways while bouncing off of parked cars, Reynolds is no stranger to performing a stunt or two. In fact, he’s made a name for himself opting to do his own; but now he says that getting older has made it increasingly more difficult.

“You’re not allowed to eat Advil like cereal,” he joked in the interview. “Things start to hurt. After I turned 35, being thrown onto cement wasn’t hilarious anymore. It had been upgraded to hell.”

But before fans start to worry if the highly anticipated Deadpool 3 will feature more of Reynold’s stunt double and less of the heartthrob doing summersaults over car hoods, he assured moviegoers he still plans to do as much of the stunt work himself as he can.

“I really like physicality in movies,” he said. “I think it’s important to do as much of [the stunt work] yourself as you can, but I’ll step aside when there’s something that’s just too gnarly and there’s a trained professional ready to go.”

Reynolds is unfortunately familiar with how dangerous movie stunts can be. In 2016 he told Men’s Health while filming Deadpool, “When I jump off a building and hit cement, it’s not hilarious anymore: it f*ckin’ hurts.” The actor added that while filming Safe House in 2012, he cracked two vertebrae. “I’ve broken my neck; I’ve separated both my shoulders; I’ve got a wrecked disc in my back.”

And in 2017 while filming Deadpool 2 the actor revealed a stuntwoman was tragically killed while filming a motorcycle stunt. “Today, we tragically lost a member of our crew while filming Deadpool,” Reynolds tweeted. “We’re heartbroken, shocked, and devastated… but recognize nothing can come close to the grief and inexplicable pain her family and loved ones must feel in this moment. My heart pours out to them—along with each and every person she touched in this world.”

The father of three’s latest film The Adam Project will premiere on Netflix on March 11 and will include co-stars Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Zoe Saldana. Reynolds plays a time-traveling pilot who teams up with a younger version of himself (Walker Scobell) and his late father (Ruffalo) to save his future and come to terms with his past.

We can’t wait to see what action-packed moves he’ll perform—or maybe, his stunt double.
