Samuel L. Jackson Hits Back at the Criticism of Marvel Movies

Acting legend Samuel L. Jackson has weighed in on the long-standing debate about whether Marvel movies are “cinema.”

The Pulp Fiction star, also known for playing Nick Fury in the MCU, has joined the heated discussion originated from Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola’s diminishing comments about superhero films.

“All movies are valid,” Jackson said in an interview with The Times.

“Some go to the cinema to be moved dearly. Some like superheroes. If somebody has more butts on seats it just means your audience is not as broad. There are people who have had successful careers but nobody can recite one line of their parts. I’m the guy who says shit that’s on a T-shirt.”

Jackson, who will receive his Honorary Oscar at the 2022 Governors Awards on March 25, also said he is tired of elitism within the industry.

“They should have an Oscar for the most popular movie,” he said. “Because that’s what the business is about.”

This year, the Academy have introduced a fan favorite award to be voted for by fans on Twitter and on the Academy’s official website. Among the contenders, there’s the latest Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland, which has grossed $1.8 billion.

“They should [give it an Oscar]! It did what movies did for ever – it got people to a big dark room,” Jackson stated.

In 2019, Scorsese questioned the artistic value of superhero films, comparing them to theme parks, while Coppola deemed the movies “despicable”.

“I don’t see them,” The Irishman filmmaker told Empire at the time. “I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema.

“Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Back then, Jackson and several MCU stars hit back at Scorsese’s negative comments, with the Jungle Fever actor saying: “You know, everybody doesn’t like his stuff either. I mean, we happen to, but everybody doesn’t.”
