Shawn Mendes Cancels His Tour to Focus on His Mental Health

Shawn Mendes has announced he is cancelling the remaining North American, European and United Kingdom dates of his tour, explaining that he needs to prioritize his mental wellbeing.

“I wasn’t totally prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take on me,” he wrote in a post on Instagram. “I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away. After speaking with my team and working with an incredible group of health professionals, it has become more clear that I need to take the time I’ve never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger.”

“I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I’ve taken the right time to heal,” he continued. “I love you all and thank you all so much for supporting me and sticking by me on this journey.”

Mendes is the latest in a growing number of male celebrities who are speaking openly about their mental health journey. Shazam! star Zachary Levi has recently described his experience of therapy as “life-changing,” while Prince Harry opened up about his “mental fitness” routine. In the world of combat sports, MMA figher Paddy Pimblett and strongman turned boxer Eddie Hall have both urged men to speak up and get help if they are struggling with mental health, citing the statistic that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 40.
