Shazam! Star Zachary Levi Says Going to Therapy Was ‘Life-Saving’

Zachary Levi is returning to the DC screen universe as kid-turned-superhero Shazam in upcoming sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, in which he will face off against leading ladies Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren, who are playing the Daughters of Atlas. But as Levi revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, that kind of mythic conflict is nothing compared to his very real long-term battle with depression and anxiety.

The actor reflected on his mental health journey in a red carpet interview with ET, during which he said that he believes going to therapy and getting the help he needed ended up saving his life.

“My whole life I’ve been struggling with clinical depression at various times, struggling with anxiety probably my entire life,” he said. “I had this total breakdown and went through this life-changing, life-saving thing called therapy. I figured out what I was going through and how I got there and why I ended up being who I was. [I got] all the help I needed to get.”

“I think there are so many problems in the world, but if you trace all those problems back to the root, it’s somebody’s broken heart or broken mind,” he continued. “Every bad thing that goes on in this world, ultimately, I think we can correct out those courses. If we just go heal people, heal their minds, heal their hearts, and start trying to figure out how to truly love themselves and us then figuring out how to love other people.”
