Electric vs. Manual
Electric trimmers are great because they trim hair quickly and efficiently, cutting down on the time you spend in front of a mirror. They’re also usually easier to achieve a uniform length to hair, so if you like that look on your eyebrows, an electric trimmer is a good idea for you.
Manual trimming tools, like scissors, razors and tweezers are able to be used more discriminately. They’re more adept at trimming and removing individual hairs, like those long suckers that grow out of the middle of your brows or wayward hairs that fall outside the brow shape. They’re also slightly better at touchups between larger trimming jobs. And, it should be noted, every professional we know uses manual tools to trim eyebrows more often than an electric trimmer.
Functionality
Eyebrow trimming may mean something different to you than it does to us, so choose the tool that is best used for what you want. If you’re not so concerned about shaping your brows and just want to keep long hairs at bay, for instance, you’d choose scissors over a razor. If you like your brows to have a uniform length or want to frequently shave unibrow hairs, an actual trimmer might be good for you. Think about what you are hoping to achieve with your eyebrow grooming and consider tools that help get that specific job done.
Safety and Ergonomic Design
Remember that you are using these tools fairly close to your eyes, so you want to consider two things. First, safety. Using scissors that are designed for eyebrows means they are typically much smaller than normal scissors with a much finer point making them easier to maneuver in a small space and minimize the risk of hurting your eye. Similarly, some trimmers have guards that help further protect your eye or skin from the razor’s blade.
Second, the design is important because if something is unwieldy to hold or your hand gets fatigued from holding it for a long time, it’s hard to use in a small area like your eyebrows. Look for tools that are specifically designed for the eyebrow area with things like angled blades, rounded edges and lighter weight casings.
Travel Friendly
If you’re going to keep your eyebrow grooming game on point even if you’re traveling, remember that taking scissors through a TSA security checkpoint is usually not going to fly. If you’re planning to keep your trimming tools in our dopp kit, consider an electric trimmer or tweezers that won’t get flagged and taken by security.
