What Does Thread Count Mean on Sheets?

Thread count helps us know how many threads are in one square inch of a piece of fabric—specifically the number of both horizontal and vertical threads. A general rule of thumb is the higher the thread count the softer the fabric, or in this case your sheets. A high thread count number also means the sheet will be more durable and softer as it wears over time.

However, it’s worth noting that a high thread count does not always mean it’s superior to a lower number. Companies can use industry tricks (like weaving several yarns and twisting them together) to get high thread counts. So while thread count is important, it’s not the only feature that will determine the overall quality of your sheets. Instead, take note of thread count and then focus more on the type of fabric you’re buying, as well as what treatments (or lack of) each brand uses on the fabric.

If you’re looking for a specific number, then a thread count of least 200 will have you set. Most new brands (like Riley and Parachute) don’t list thread counts because they believe other features of the sheets are more important. So don’t get too caught up on thread count. Instead evaluate all of the fabrics’ features.

What Are the Best Bed Sheet Fabrics for All Season Use

Many of us have probably only had one set of sheets for our bedding at one point in our lives. Trust us, we’re better off having multiple sets. Whether you use your extra sets as backups or for different seasons, the best fabric to start with is high-quality cotton. Pima, Egyptian, Supima, and Silk are all classic bedsheet fabrics you can have on your bed for all four seasons.

Another newer fabric that’s a good option for all season use (and for those who are hot sleepers) is bamboo. Bamboo sheets are technically made from viscose that’s drawn from bamboo stalks, thus making them a more eco-friendly sourced material compared to how cotton needs to be grown and processed.

The only bed sheet fabric that’s not always best for year-round use is linen. The wonderfully light and breathable fabric is best suited for summer, and so it’s worth having a pair of linen sheets to treat yourself once the heat comes around. But even this rule isn’t concrete, because if you feel like you sleep well with linen all year-round, then do what works best for you!

Stick to high quality cottons and bamboo sheets to start if you want sheets that are going to work for all seasons.

How We Selected

For the past 18 months, we consulted with Men’s Health‘s editors and writers on the best bed sheets.. Experts, including our Deputy Editor of Commerce Christian Gollayan, put a number of sheets to the test and evaluated their comfort, breathability, softness, and durability. We also considered top-reviewed bed sheets with high praise from e-commerce websites we trust.
