2018’s The Meg was a good-old fashioned monster movie that delivered plenty of thrills with a genuinely terrifying killer shark and a believable-enough action hero in the shape of Jason Statham. So it should come as absolutely no surprise that a sequel is now in theaters.
Meg 2: The Trench is based on the novel The Trench by Steve Alten, who also wrote Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, which inspired the first movie. It takes place five years after The Meg, and follows Statham’s character, rescue diver Jonas Taylor, as he and the Mana One team explore new depths of the Mariana Trench, and encounter—you guessed it—more giant, bloodthirsty prehistoric Megalodons.
There is already talk of a third movie in the franchise, although that decision will be contingent on ticket sales for this installment. However, should the studio decide to sail onwards with more movies, there are plenty more stories to tell featuring that big-ass shark: in addition to Meg and The Trench, Steve Alten wrote several more novels following Jonas Taylor: Primal Waters, Hell’s Aquarium, Origins, Nightstalkers, Generations, and Purgatory.
With so many potential adventures still in store, might Meg 2: The Trench tease a return of the Megalodon?
Does Meg 2: The Trench have a post-credit scene?
Sadly, there is no final bone-crunching shark attack once the credits start to roll on Meg 2. You’re safe to leave the theater, although it might be a while before you feel safe going for a swim.
