In a new video on the Lean Machines’ YouTube channel, vloggers John and Leon travel to a Brazilian jiu jitsu gym so that Leon can take part in his first-ever lesson. His instructor for this inaugural training session is none other than Braulio Estima, the 4th degree black belt and former training partner of UFC star Georges St-Pierre, who gives the newbie an introduction to the core concepts of the martial art, including some takedowns, rolling, control, and submission techniques.
Leon takes to it like a natural, excelling at the first takedown Braulio teaches him before moving onto passing moves. Braulio describes Brazilian jiu jitsu as a combination of an argument between two people and a game of chess, where you are not only thinking about your offense, but also ensuring that you can maintain a defense. He demonstrates when pinning down John and keeping his own feet hidden away so that there is nothing for his opponent to lodge onto.
When it comes to submissions, Braulio instructs Leon in how to safely perform some “classic” techniques, including a chokehold. “It’s not how hard you can squeeze, it’s how long you can keep a certain course,” he says. “If you burn out by squeezing too hard, someone can handle the breath for a minute or so, you can run out of energy and the person will escape, so you have to find the sweet spot of strength that is not too much and not not enough.”
All in all, Braulio praises Leon’s self-awareness, coordination, physicality and the speed with which he picked up the techniques, and then ends the session by sparring with both John and Leon, showing off the “godly power” that helped him multiple championships and secure a reputation as one of the top Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners in the world.
