Watch Strongman Eddie Hall Coach His Son Through First Deadlift

Strongman and boxer Eddie Hall regularly invites other athletes and fitness influencers to train with him at his home gym in Stoke. In a new video on his YouTube channel, Hall is not only joined by Eddie Williams, two-time winner of Australia’s Strongest Man and star of America’s Got Talent, but also by a weightlifting newbie from a little closer to home: his own son Max, who is eager to try his first deadlift.

Hall starts out by instructing Max in the proper form for a deadlift, using a bar without any weights to get him used to the grip and pattern of motion.

“Get your grip right, shoulder width,” he explains, demonstrating on the bar. “So you drop the bar, then you just drop your hips until your shin touches the bar, then you’re up, and that’s the perfect deadlift technique. That’s literally there is to it.”

He adds 22 pounds to the bar, and Max executes the move with what his dad describes as “absolutely perfect” form. They then double that weight to 44 pounds, and Max is able to perform five reps before reaching failure.

Hall goes on to offer Williams some advice on how he can adjust his deadlifting technique to avoid pain or strain in his back: by stepping closer to the bar, then as he gets into the crouched starting position, leaning back and envisioning himself in more of a leg press. “You’re talking one, one and a half centimeters tweak,” says Hall. “A deadlift’s got to travel in an A to B motion… You want to get it in that perfect line to start with.”
