UFC welterweight Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson frequently shares insights into his MMA training on his YouTube channel, as well as taking part in an array of physical challenges like testing his strength and stability on viral TikTok fitness trends, fighting using only defensive moves, and staging a martial arts “battle royale” with a bodybuilder and a karate black belt.
In a new video with YouTube’s Sensei Seth, Thompson tries an altogether different challenge, putting on an Oculus virtual reality headset and showing off his skills against CGI fighters in a boxing game. He soon finds that sparring in the metaverse is just as exhausting as it is in real life.
“That’s actually a really good workout,” he says after 20 minutes in the virtual ring. “I am sweating profusely right now… This is an amazing workout.”
He adds that the overall experience feels “90 percent” like he’s fighting a real person. “I’m not taking any damage, but when you do get hit, you have to recover, you have to back up, you’ve got to pick your shots,” he says. “I know you’re not actually hitting something solid, but just the constant pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop wears the shoulders out. I feel a good pump in my shoulders right now.”
Round after round, Thompson emerges victorious against each of his virtual opponents, defeating several of them by TKO. “I had a great time,” he concludes. “Number one, I got a good cardio session. Number two, I got to slay some dudes.”
