We Have a Major Update on the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has confirmed that he has almost finished writing the feature film and they are nearly ready to begin shooting.

While Knight had previously confirmed that a Peaky Blinders movie would be going ahead after season six, he revealed more details in an interview with Heart Breakfast‘s Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman on Thursday (July 28).

“I’m writing it right now. I mean, I’m nearly done writing it, and we’re going to shoot it… I’m setting up some film and television studios in Digbeth in Birmingham,” Knight told the radio hosts.

During the interview, Knight revealed that he chose the filming locations in Digbeth and Small Heath because the real-life Peaky Blinders actually “roamed” there.

“We’re going to shoot it at the studios in Digbeth, and on location in Digbeth in Birmingham. Digbeth and Small Heath is where the Peaky Blinders actually roamed,” explained Knight. “So it’s like Peaky’s coming home, basically.

According to the showrunner, filming is due to begin within the next 18 months but there is no release date in sight as of yet as this will “depend on the distributors and things”.

After coronavirus impacted so many productions and led to the decision to scrap season seven, Knight said he was excited to showcase the movie at an event where people can watch it together.

“I’m just really looking forward to having a Peaky event where people can watch it communally,” he said. “I mean, the social media community is so strong and people talk to each other. But to actually be together physically will be really interesting.”

Along with scheduling and writing details, Knight teased the presenters about who would be back for the big-screen adaptation.

When asked if some familiar cast members would return, he replied: “Of course, and some new faces that will hopefully be quite surprising.”
