If you’re reading this, it’s because you’re at least a little curious about what semen tastes like. And that’s normal! In the course of a sex session that involves a penis, there are various ways for cum to enter mouth territory, whether it’s spitting or swallowing after a blowjob or playing with bodily fluids, one of the most common sexual kinks among American adults. Whether you’re wondering how your partner likes your own semen, or you’re planning to get up close and personal with someone else’s junk, we’re here to help you learn more about the taste of semen.
But first, what is semen, anyway?
It’s not all sperm. In fact, sperm is a very small part of the milky fluid that comes out of your penis when you ejaculate.
“Semen is a combination of water, plasma, and mucus,” says Jamin Brahmbhatt, MD, a urologist at Orlando Health and assistant professor at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. The fluids in semen come from the testicles, seminal vesicles, prostate, and urethral glands.
Does semen have nutrients in it?
Semen contains very small amounts of nutrients, including fructose, glucose, calcium, protein, Vitamin, C, and zinc, Brahmbhatt says. But don’t believe the myth about semen being a good source of nutrition.
“The nutrients within semen are not sufficient for a daily diet,” he warns. “There are a lot of online articles promoting semen as a source of protein. Stick to protein shakes, or other sources; the amount of protein in semen is negligible.”
So, what does semen taste like?
Scientists apparently have more pressing matters to study than the taste of semen. “There is no structured research looking at what semen should or does taste like,” Brahmbhatt says. “Most of the information out there is based on shared personal experiences.”
We searched “what does semen taste like?” on Reddit, and—not shockingly at all—found a bounty of answers from random internet users.
Some people have highlighted certain savory flavor notes. “A little salty, but also it’s got this kind of umami to it?” one person wrote. “The fluid itself is very viscous and it’ll kind of take over your whole palette once you’ve tasted it.” Another Redditor described it as tasting “like a salty gun that just went off in your mouth,” which inspired this response from someone else: “It’s like a warm loogie.”
But other people have said it doesn’t have much of a taste at all. “I tried my own,” one person volunteered. “It didn’t really have a taste—a little bitter, but thats it.” Another user said, “Kinda depends on the guy. I’ve had some that didn’t taste like anything at all, besides a bit salty.”
Normal semen is slightly alkaline, with a pH in the 7.2-8 range, according to Brahmbhatt. “Water, which is neither acidic nor alkaline, has a pH of 7,” he explains. “So just by thinking of it this way, semen may taste just like water, which for the average person takes like nothing.”
Remember, taste varies from person to person. “Some say semen tastes sweet, which could be due to the sugar content of semen,” Brahmbhatt says. “Others have said semen tastes bitter, metallic, or sour, which could be based on individual taste buds or the alkaline nature of semen.”
A person’s perception of taste also depends on what they’ve recently eaten and how hydrated they are. “If you are dehydrated and just had onion rings then semen is likely going to taste different than when you are hydrated and just had a salad,” Brahmbhatt says.
Can I change the taste of my semen?
You might have heard the rumor that eating loads of pineapple can improve the taste of your cum. While there isn’t any science to support the specific link between pineapple and sweeter semen, “we do know that diet can affect the taste and smell of your body fluids,” Brahmbhatt says. “Extrapolating from this, you can hypothesize that the flavor of semen can be altered by diet.”
Onion, garlic, asparagus, dairy products, certain meats, and certain fruits (including orange, papaya, and—yes—pineapple) are all known to change the taste and smell of your body fluids. “Depending on what you have eaten, the taste could theoretically be bitter or sweet,” Brahmbhatt says. “It all depends on how your body metabolizes what you are eating. I tell my patients if something you eat gives you bad breath or gas, it’s probably going to alter the tastes of your body fluids as well.”
Your hydration level may also play a role in the taste of your semen. The more dehydrated you are, the thicker your cum is. “When the semen is concentrated, some of the taste may be more noticeable,” Brahmbhatt explains.
The takeaway? Drinking lots of water and eating fruit won’t suddenly make your semen taste like the most delicious thing on earth, but it might make a slight difference. And hey, putting healthy things into your body is never a bad thing.
