IN THE FIRST episode of 2023’s edition of Hard Knocks—the 19th season of the HBO documentary series chronicling every aspect of an NFL team’s training camp—something happens that has never happened before: the narrator shows up. That’s right: Liev Schreiber—best known Ray Donovan from Ray Donovan, Cotton Weary from Scream, and the longtime narrator of Hard Knocks—drops in via helicopter (!), in the flesh, to check out the early goings of training camp with the New York Jets.
Maybe that’s because new Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers—who referred to Schreiber’s narration as “the voice of God”—is a longtime fan, and the in-person appearance made for a sure bet to make things interesting. When Schreiber arrived, there was a good bit of shit-shooting; Rodgers told the actor that he’s been a fan of his movies, his work narrating 24/7 (HBO’s similar-to-Hard Knocks boxing series), and more. But Schreiber asked Rodgers one question that NFL fans everyone may have assumed the answer to, but probably never heard before: why doesn’t anyone want to be on the show?
It’s hard to definitively find information on this one way or the other, as it all tends to happen behind NFL closed doors. But it’s no secret that teams don’t love having those cameras around all the time before a season is about to start. Let’s put it this way: the Jets didn’t choose Hard Knocks. Hard Knocks chose the Jets. “Distraction,” Rodgers told him, not out of scorn but general, no-hesitation honesty.
But guess what? Outside of the games themselves, Hard Knocks is the most entertaining NFL-related product there is. And when you’re the New York Jets—who haven’t made the playoffs since the last time they were on Hard Knocks, during the 2010 season—well, why the hell not? May as well try to mix things up.
And with a future Hall of Fame Quarterback now in town, along with a dominant defense, Hard Knocks could be the first stop on a season-long journey toward mixing something up in the best possible way.
If you’re an NFL fan, this is what you’re living for. And if you’re an NFL fan, you aren’t going to want to miss an episode. We can help with that part.
