When New Episodes Come Out

IT’S BEEN a while since we last saw The Mandalorian (real name: Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal) and his trusty and deceptively powerful adorable little friend Grogu (commonly known as Baby Yoda), and even longer since we actually saw episodes of The Mandalorian on Disney+. We got the surprise of seeing this dynamic duo reunite back in early 2022 when The Book of Boba Fett kind of turned into The Mandalorian Season 2.5 halfway through—but now, for the first time since 2020, we’re back for Season 3 of the real thing, baby.

Obviously, 2023 has already been a big year for emotionally distant anti-heroes played by Pedro Pascal who are reluctantly attached to a special young person they’re helping on an ever-important journey. That’s the set-up for The Last of Us, HBO’s hit post-apocalyptic drama based on the video game of the same name, and it’s also essentially the basis of The Mandalorian. But where The Last of Us leans into its prestige drama, The Mandalorian has always leaned into the fact that it is, in essence, a 30-45 minute space western. And that’s awesome. This show is going for a different kind of storytelling than, say, Andor—which was the wildly-successful Star Wars take on a prestige drama—and there’s a place for both.

With Mando and Grogu now essentially reunited for good, it seems like Season 3 could once again find us with some fun guest stars and an exciting season long plot. Season 2 wrapped a lot of stuff up—the main villain Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) was handled, for instance—and it seems like Season 3 will be a great opportunity to get some new plot threads off the ground. Hey, whatever works. As long as they’re making The Mandalorian, we’ll be watching.
