Moon Knight is a bit different than other Marvel origin stories. When Captain America or Iron Man or Doctor Strange started out, their internal battles—what shaped them into the characters they would eventually become—were all about morals, past choices, or their identities. Or their struggles primarily were about their environments. On the other hand, Moon Knight (aka Steven Grant and/or Marc Spector, both played by Oscar Isaac) has an origin story that rests in fully accepting himself. With multiple personalities warring in his head, including the Egyptian Moon God Khonshu, Moon Knight often struggles to make sense of reality. And it makes battling a supernatural antagonist even harder.
When Steven Grant and Marc Spector aren’t fighting over which identity controls their shared body (and the powers of being in the Moon Knight/Mr. Knight suit), they’re fighting Arthur Harrow (played by Ethan Hawke), a man who claims to serve the Egyptian god Ammit. In episode 2, Harrow explains to Steven how he came to be Ammit’s avatar, and his ultimate plan to bring her into the mortal world to judge people before they commit evil acts (very Minority Report right there).
Throughout the show, Moon Knight has to figure out not only how to manage the numerous personalities all in his head, and how to be a superhero, but also how to defeat Ammit, who, if released, will become an all-powerful force able to wipe out any humans she deems capable of committing heinous acts. But before we get into just how bad things could get. Who is Ammit anyway? It’s safe to say most people don’t know much about Egyptian gods, much less ones Marvel repackages as comic book villains.

Who is Ammit in Moon Knight?
According to Marvel’s official website, Ammit (also sometimes written as Ammut or Ammitu) is a goddess of ancient Egyptian religion who serves the goddess Ma’at. In the underworld, Ma’at judges souls. Whenever a soul is deemed evil or unworthy, Ammit eats them, thus earning her moniker Devourer of the Dead. She’s also a fan of giving riddles, and if answered incorrectly, well, you can probably guess what she does next.
Her physical form is a mixture between three animals, with the head of a crocodile, a lion’s mane and paws, leopard spots, and a hippo hind. Basically, she’s an imposing foe.
In Moon Knight, Ammit appears to be a mixture of herself and her master Ma’at. Using Arthur Harrow, she gifts him a cane which judges the living before they can do something bad, then devours their souls if they are found to be morally corrupt.
Ammit notably appears in Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth) and Greg Smallwood’s two-year run of Moon Knight, where she appeared in both human and animal form, tricking Marc into believing he’s in a mental facility. She also commands two jackals, similar to the television show.
It’s too soon to tell if Ammit will, together with Harrow, be the main villain in Moon Knight, or if the show still has some twists for us to discover.
