Who Voices Khonshu in Moon Knight? F Murray Abraham Role Explained

To many, Moon Knight will likely be a confusing show. For the first time in the Disney+ era of Marvel Cinematic Universe titles, the story focuses on entirely new characters—and so the show brought in perhaps its most impressive duo yet, in Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke. to lead that journey into the unknown. But on top of viewers getting to know a whole new superhero, with new surrounding characters, in a setting (London) that Marvel has barely touched, Moon Knight also brings ancient gods and mental illness into the fray, which certainly stands to complicate things.

Isaac plays the dual (for now) role of Marc Spector, a mercenary, and Steven Grant, a mild-mannered museum gift shop employee. The thing about Spector, though, is that he’s actually the revived-from-the-dead human avatar for the ancient Egyptian god of the moon named Khonshu, who appears throughout the series with a large beaked skull. The other thing about Spector is that, because he has Dissociative Identity Disorder, he shares a body with Grant. And Grant is just figuring this all out.

Part of what leads Grant down his road to realization is that he begins to both see Khonshu, and also hear his voice. And that voice is booming, stern, and familiar; the kind of voice that would make sense for an agitated ancient god. This would all be complicated enough as these parties work to figure all of this out, but Hawke’s character—a cult leader type, and possible god Avatar himself named Arthur Harrow—is trying to steal a scarab that’s in Steven/Marc’s possession. And now these three are going to have to all work this all out for the sake of keeping the world spinning the right way.

But as the series goes on, and Khonshu’s role continues to increase, you may find yourself wondering where you’ve heard that voice before—and it’s because it’s an actor who’s been at it for a long time.

Khonshu, in all of his beaked, frustrated, glory, is voiced by Academy Award-winning actor F. Murray Abraham. Abraham won the Oscar for Best Actor back in 1985 for his role as Antonio Salieri in the film Amadeus.

By having Abraham voice Khonshu in Moon Knight, Marvel is also effectively creating a reunion from one of the most memorable scenes of Joel and Ethan Coen’s 2013 film Inside Llewyn Davis, where Oscar Isaac played the titular struggling folk singer. In the aforementioned scene, Llewyn auditions for a record producer named Bud Grossman (Abraham), who listens to him pour his entire heart out—only to shut him down. It’s a truly special moment in a movie made by some of our greatest filmmakers.

Abraham has also relatively recently appeared in a pair of Wes Anderson movies in The Grand Budapest Hotel and Isle of Dogs. On the TV side of things, he had a resurgence when appearing in Showtime’s espionage series Homeland, and currently plays the hilarious sci-fi writer C.W. Longbottom on Rob McElhenney‘s excellent AppleTV+ show, Mythic Quest.
