Barbie is easily one of the biggest movies of 2023. The toy-to-movie adaptation has enticed both adults and children alike with a famed director (Greta Gerwig), star-studded cast (Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and many, many more), and its release date partner, the far more serious Oppenheimer. At first glance, it may not appear like a movie about a children’s toy is very exciting, but even if you barely go on social media, it’s difficult to ignore the incredible marketing campaign for the film, which is without a doubt convincing anyone who may be on the fence to go out and see Barbie.
There’s enough hype for Barbie, in fact, that already people are asking if there are plans for more films. According to Forbes, Mattel, the toy company which owns Barbie and Hot Wheels, says they have 45 movies in development based on their various toy properties. There’s no word on what the movies are about, who’s starring in them, or who’s directing, but if any of them are like Barbie, Mattel might become successful enough at making movie adaptations they decide to open up their own studio.
But what does all this mean for Barbie? It may be hard to make a sequel, as stars Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie are both constantly in demand (along with many of their co-stars). It may also be in Mattel’s best interest to stick to one film, as the bar for a second Barbie movie will be incredibly high considering the intense reaction to the first film. Here’s what we know about a potential Barbie sequel.
Will Barbie Have a Sequel?
The team behind the original Barbie has said nothing definitive about a sequel yet. But when speaking with ET, director Greta Gerwig said they’re taking a wait and see approach. “Honestly, I’m just focused on getting this one out and crossing all my fingers and toes. And then we’ll see what happens after that,” she said.
On an even more positive note, TIME reported Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz was excited about the possibility of more Barbie movies. And Margot Robbie said conversations have had, but nothing is set in stone. “It could go a million different directions from this point,” she said. “But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.”
With as much fanfare as Barbie has mustered, it’s a good sign we’ll see more of the famous doll and her friends soon enough.
