When you have a fully-equipped home gym and even travel with your very own Iron Paradise, as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson does, you can work out any time of the day or night—as the actor just demonstrated, by sharing a peek on Instagram at his most recent 2:30 a.m. upper body workout.
“230am Saturday night training. Not my usual workout time, but it was just one of those long, long days where all kinds of unexpected shit gets throw at ya,” he wrote. “Body didn’t want to go train in the middle of the night – but that one tiny voice in my gut said you may not want to, but after a day like today, you sure as fuck need to.”
“Honestly, I wound up having one of the best workouts,” he continued. “Completely rejuvenated and able to clear my head and energy. My adrenals were already at a 10, so in a way this was all very calming for me… We gotta listen to that voice in our gut that says yes when the rest of our body is saying no.”
Johnson went on to outline the “burning superset” he used to help build out his boulder shoulders during the early-morning session: 20 reps of the close grip row followed by 20 reps of seated dumbbell side lateral raises. He advised to make sure you “stretch and elongate those lat fibers” at the midway point of each movement to ensure every single repetition is as effective as possible.
It is also worth pointing out here that Johnson is lifting relatively light on those lateral raises—a smart way to train if you’re prioritizing healthy shoulders in later life.
